About Me
I am an ophthalmologist who is fellowship trained in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery. As an oculoplastic surgeon, I work alongside my ophthalmology colleagues as well as other specialists from head and neck surgery, dermatology and endocrinology to restore and retain the function and youthfulness of patients’ eyes and face.
Such delivery of highly specialized and multidisciplinary medical care is both the fulfillment of my commitment as a doctor, as well as the gold standard for modern medicine. I am excited to be part of Kaiser Permanente, an organization that allows me to deliver the best that I can.
My professional interests and expertise encompass a variety of conditions including: droopy brow and eyelids (ptosis, dermatochalasis), eyelid cancer, excessive tearing (nasolacrimal duct obstruction), misdirected lashes (trichiasis), blepharospasm/facial spasm, orbital tumors, thyroid eye disease, facial palsy, periocular trauma, blind painful eyes, as well as congenital eyelid, lacrimal and orbital anomalies.
I also perform cosmetic surgery such as cosmetic Asian blepharoplasty (eyelid crease formation and canthoplasty), cosmetic upper and lower blepharoplasty, endoscopic brow lift and midface lift. Non-surgical services such as Botox, facial filler (Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero) injections, skin resurfacing, and skin care are provided as well.
My philosophy of care is that “…form ever follows function. That is the law” (Louis Sullivan, 1896). Restoring function based on the knowledge of the anatomy is the foundation for achieving excellent aesthetic outcome. Because of this, I invest time and energy to be a life-long student of the human body. At Kaiser Permanente, I value the autonomy I have as a physician and surgeon. I am able to deliver care to my patients the best way I see fit, without having to worry about what treatments will be the most cost effective or profitable.
I was an engineer and amateur artist before I became a surgeon. I was the first to become a medical doctor in my large extended family and I feel very lucky to have found my passion in my profession. I always had an interest in cancer research, which was the impetus for my career change from engineering to medicine. I fell in love with eye surgery and its ability to improve the quality of life, which is the main reason I pursued Ophthalmology. But my vexation with cancer brought me to completion of fellowship training in both Ocular Oncology and Oculofacial Plastic Surgery. I am keenly aware of my potential role to save lives through early detection and eradication of cancer in the periocular region. My love for art and form serves me well as a reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon.
Family and Friends
Growing up, I had the privilege of living in Asia, South America and United States. Through my rich personal experience, I truly appreciate the wonderful cultural diversity we have in the greater Bay area. I am married to my loving husband of 7 years and we are proud parents of a toddler who was born in San Francisco.
Hobbies and interests
As a family, we love to explore the great outdoors from the ocean to the mountain tops, on surf boards, skis or in hiking boots.
